Blue skies, firm snow underfoot, and sunlight that sparkles like the first page of a new story.

This week’s photo was taken at Thredbo, one of Australia’s premier alpine resorts, where the snow season officially opened on June 7. And with snow already on the ground and clear skies overhead, it felt like the season started just right.

Opening weekend often feels like a reunion—not just with the snow, but with the people who live for it. On the lifts, in the cafés, and by the base lodge, we catch up with instructors we haven’t seen in months. We share stories from Niseko’s winter and laugh about the last run, the best powder, or the season that flew by.

There’s something timeless about that first ride up the lift. The way the sun warms your back. The chill in the air that wakes you up. The sound of skis carving through fresh tracks.

This moment—bright, simple, and full of promise—is what we wait for.

From Niseko’s quiet green summer to Thredbo’s sunlit slopes, winter is here again.

See you next week with another sensory moment from the snowy side of Australia.
